FIRECRACKER

Situation: Steve Balderson's second film involves a leap from the low budget format of PEP SQUAD. FIRECRACKER is a thrilling murder mystery based upon an actual murder that occurred in Eisenhower-era Kansas. The production company, Dikenga Films, was searching for financing to produce the film.

Needs: In a media-savvy, visually astute industry, the company needed to create visually stunning and attention grabbing material to convince potential investors that FIRECRACKER represents a sound investment. In addition, a means for stimulating public interest in the film is important as many successful films establish ground-swells of support via the internet.

Solutions:

  • A very detailed web site was created focusing on the cast and the story. It features music (Nocturnes by Chopin) stunning imagery as well as featured pages on the individual cast members.
  • A second site was created which, through use of periodic "chapters," is serially revealing, at least in part, the true story behind the film. Notices were sent to the Dikenga mailing list and to links on other web sites that have mentioned the film. Current email subscribers to the "true story" number over 3,000. The individual episodes have featured sound clips from interviews, photos of the murder house and other landmarks associated with the crime and detailed information about the various individuals who played a role in the "true story."
  • A poster was created for use at the Cannes Film Market to assist the sales agent in pre-selling the film in various countries.
  • Post cards were created, and then were custom imprinted in the message area announcing each cast member. These were sent to the Dikenga mailing list of distributors, sales companies and producers as each new cast member was revealed.
  • A 3 minute digital video "teaser" was made to promote the film to potential investors as well as for use on the "true story" web site. Shot and edited by Imagemakers, the teaser features music, sound effects and imagery to convey the "look" of the finished film, as well as the mystery surrounding the true crime.
  • T-shirts have been designed to be used as giveaways to cast members, other celebrities (the shirts have been spotted being worn in Los Angeles), and possibly for sale over the internet.
